Guanacaste Day in Costa Rica is celebrated every 25th of July.

Also known as the ‘Day of Annexation of Partido de Nicoya.’

This day is set in history as when most of present-day Guanacaste province became part of Costa Rica, the Annexation of 1824.

The History of Guanacaste Day in Costa Rica

In 1824, the Federal Republic of Central America comprised Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. This resulted from Spanish rule ending in Central America due to the independence movements surging through Spanish America.

The Partido de Nicoya was a piece of what was then the Province of Nicaragua y Costa Rica during colonial times, which split into the Province of Nicaragua and the Province of Costa Rica in 1821. Partido de Nicoya would then be part of the Province of Nicaragua.

The major cities at that time (Nicoya, Santa Cruz, and Liberia) held meetings to discuss staying in Nicaragua or joining Costa Rica. These meetings led to a referendum vote on July 25, 1824, where the population of Nicoya and Santa Cruz voted for incorporation into Costa Rica, while the city of Liberia (then called Guanacaste) wanted to stay with Nicaragua.

The Central American Federal Republic ratified the incorporation on March 8, 1825. From then on, most of what is now the province of Guanacaste became a part of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has a rich and colorful history. Today is a great day for celebration.

Note:

All banks, government offices, and most private businesses are closed. Malls and restaurants are usually open for business.
