Tourists from anywhere in the world can visit Costa Rica, provided they meet the standard visa requirements. No proof of vaccination, travel insurance, or health forms is required*

* To prevent the spread of the coronavirus that is affecting China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, Costa Rica requires visitors coming from those countries to have negative results on the covid-19 test. In order to enter the country, prospective visitors will be required to provide proof of a negative PCR (swab) or antigen test that was taken within the previous 72 hours.

This regulation was implemented on January 9, 2023, and applies to any foreigner who resides in designated locations or who has traveled there within the previous 2 weeks. At airports as well as land border crossings, travelers will be required to have negative covid tests. In addition, a vaccination certificate that details a complete vaccination schedule must be shown for all individuals who are over the age of 12 years old.

It is also suggested that Costa Ricans who have just returned from China, Taiwan, Macao, or Hong Kong begin a seven-day period of preventative isolation as soon as they get back in the country.

With the implementation of this measure, Costa Rica has joined the list of other countries that have made the decision to reapply restrictions for tourists coming from that part of the world. These countries include the United States of America, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, India, and Morocco, to name just a few.

The use of face masks is not mandatory in Costa Rica, except by front-line health workers, and persons who attend health care establishments (such as clinics, hospitals, and labs).
