Immigration Corruption in Costa Rica

Costa Rican Immigration is a bit of a mess these days. Unfortunately, the lack of sufficient organization and the pressures of added migrants in recent years are catching up to them. These structural deficiencies can lead to potential Immigration corruption.

Just this morning, the OIJ (the investigative arm of law enforcement in Costa Rica) raided the main Immigration facilities in La Uruca, San José, and detained 11 officials (see the original news article in Spanish). It seems to be related to a possible international human trafficking network. The investigation is ongoing, and public details are scarce at this time.

What can you take away from this?

Don’t use shortcuts to get your residency status. If you are approached by someone who says he or she has special connections with Immigration and can get your residency application ahead of the line — or even approved when it should not be — walk the other way!
