Do you (or your spouse) have at least 1 monthly pension or disability pension for a minimum of $1,000 USD for the rest of your life?
If this is the case, you can qualify for the Residency for Pension (Pensionado) category. Of all the other categories, you will find that the Pensionado is your best choice. The payment must originate from an eligible source, such as a retirement plan company, social security, or the government. Retirees, by the way, do not pay taxes on income coming from outside Costa Rica. Once your Residency is approved, you will be registered with the Social Security and Public Health Care System (CCSS or Caja), which covers pre-existing conditions.
If you’re married and want to bring your spouse or children down, then they’ll be counted as dependents. Since new residents renew their status every 2 years, they demonstrate that they have spent the appropriate number of days in CR. A temporary resident can apply for permanent residency after 3 years. As a matter of fact, with permanent residence, one can enjoy all of the rights of a Costa Rican citizen except that they cannot vote.

What do you need to get your Residency for Pension in Costa Rica?
Requirements:
• Proof of $1000 USD per month income from a permanent pension source or retirement fund;
• Must be in Costa Rica at least 1 day per year;
• Cannot work as an employee.
Specifications:
• Temporary Residency – valid for 2 years, renewable;
• Can apply for permanent residency without conditions after 3 years;
• Able to claim spouse and dependents 24 years of age and under;
• You can own a company and receive dividends.
Documents*:
1. Proof of Pension;
2. Criminal Background Check;
3. Birth Certificate;
4. Marriage Certificate (if applicable);
5. Application Form and Cover Letter (we will complete this for you);
6. Fingerprints (we can assist you with this);
7. Consular Registration (we will do it for you );
8. Eight passport-size photographs.
* – All the documents should be apostilled in your country of origin (if your home country is not part of the Apostille Convention, the documents should be authenticated or legalized in the Embassy of Costa Rica in your country of origin).

TIME EXTENSION FOR SUBMITTING DOCUMENTS
You have 90 days to submit all required documents to Immigration (DGME) once an application case file is opened. Let’s say a residency applicant has difficulties obtaining documents within the allotted 90-day period, and we can help. In this case, CRIE can request 1 extension of time to submit the documents (at the cost of $100 USD per time extension request).
IMPORTANT:
If we need to submit a time extension request on your behalf, you must pay for it promptly or risk having your case file thrown out by Immigration (DGME).
